A History of Seresta Dance Company

In 1989  at Paquito d’ Rivera’s performance at the Herod Atticus Theatre, Christina Beskou met him and daringly said to him, I have choreographed  to a song played by you, “Seresta”. Her doing so, provoked the attention and interest of the musician. He responded to her saying that he would be back in Athens in July, to perform at the Lycabettus Theatre. That was all Christina needed, to then propose to him, to do a happening together with her dancers and his group, when “Seresta” was to be played at the concert. So it was, that overcoming the difficulties posed by the organizers and, the officials responsible for the performance, Christina Beskou and her dancers danced “Seresta”to  live music played by Paquito d’ Rivera and his orchestra. Since then, “Seresta” Dance Company, as Christina Beskou named the company, began the series of quality performances which have been her trade mark until today.

Seresta Dance Company has performed in Luxembourg (Wiltz Festival), England (Euro festival), Holland (Floriade), as well as in Athens, Thessaloniki, Volos, Zakynthos, Hydra, Pilio, Munich, Salzburg, St, Johann It has also participated in 2 International Dance Competitions in Japan (Nagoya), and Paris (Prix Vollinine).

Since 1998 the choreographer is involved with the history and technique of the Argentinean Tango. After the success of the “Bar Sur” and its sequel “Café Concert”, performance for which all tickets were sold out, for the 29 days it was performed, after the first 2 days, of performing it, in Athens. The Seresta Dance Company continues its activities, performing in Athens and abroad, bringing us to its most recent production, named “Lifestyle”.

The composition of the company never remains static and unchangeable. In a constant effort of research and renovation of its performing means, Seresta invites lots of worthy artists, such as choreographers, dancers, actors, painters, sculptors, and photographers.

Seresta’s founder, Christina Beskou, has since the beginning of Seresta experimented with diverse music of differing origins, for the initiation of her choreographic process, in which form plays a significant role.

The human body’s plasticity harmonizes with the rhythm and the music, as well as with the lyrics of the songs, to express the feelings, passion, agonies, and the every day anxieties, to express the choreographer’s perception of life. The movement motives are a combination of classical and modern dance, tango, jazz, cabaret, and musical theatre in a dynamic expression of the company’s personality and soul. Theatrical elements and especially silence, are used to enhance the choreography’s dynamics and tension, while the use of language evolves into dance.

The company’s philosophy is encapsulated in the tenets of constant regeneration and research, the weaving of dance, music and theater in a multicolored tapestry.
